it rained on March 15th (after a below average winter rainfall and a dry 1975) and then did not rain again until September, and wonderfully warm with it. The experts said it would take 2 years for the water table to recover. It took 3 months as it rained continually. Nature seems to compensate. This year we had an exceptional dry and warm late summer and autumn (here in the south). We still need 2 to 3 months more rainfalls of 6" a month to top up the water table. Without that hose pipe bans next year are likely.

The extreme amount of rainfall that Cumbria was subject too would have caused flooding almost anywhere in the country. However the geology of Cumbria has amplified the terrible flooding.

Global warming effect or just the extremes of 'the average'?
