If you are keeping the standard air box there might be a difference but only if you keep it clean and don't over oil them (K&N type).
If you are going to remove the air box then you have to consider if the filter will get enough cold air or will get wet.
The standard paper air filters are pretty good when new, if you change them early you probably get similar results to using a performance type one it's just down to cost then.
