Two points: very often the difference between having an accident and avoiding one is a heartbeat of concentration. If you happen to be glancing at your speedo the moment something happens the less chance you have of avoiding it, so the more you look at your speedo, the more chance you have of not avoiding an accident. Indisputable I would of thought.
For 20 years I managed to drive without constantly looking at the speedo(without accident or speeding conviction) Like breathing the correct speed for any particular type of road was an automatic response.
Now there is no logic, so you must constantly think about what the limit is. So for me, in a lesser way, it's comparable to having to think to breath, obviously this would have a negative effect on your concentration for other tasks.
