There are quite a few reasons for this decline and yes they are to do with the government in power but also down to the individual as well. Firstly when blair got in he promised university education for the masses (in no uncertain terms) this led to the universities having more enrolments, more call for student amenities etc, this led to developers making student accomodation. We then had lots of qualified people who didnt want menial jobs (kfc, mcdonalds, tesco etc) thats why you cant find many english speakers in those establishments. That is just one of the many factors that contributed to this downfall. There are so many the availability of easy cash with no regard for paying back, and the thought that every thing should be bought now and no regard for saving to buy the latest kart!! We cant keep blaming the government because we do nothing to show our disproval. The affects of this are going to be long but ben bernake yesterday stated that the american economy has averted a recession but with experts stating this may only have prolonged the problem. We are in recession but there is one thing we will be able to get out of this its just the time it takes. As for the jobs in the depression of the 1930's this led to the highest number of entreprenuers in "recent" history. So get your thinking caps on
