First off I don't think anybody mentioned the motorway speed limit here... did they ?

Second, the national speed LIMIT on the country lanes you refer to is 60mph. On many of these lanes its unsafe to drive at 30mph, or even less. Is the government planning to assess every country lane in the land and appropriate the correct limit for every part of it ? No. They're planning on changing a 60mph limit to a 50mph to introduce even more confusion for the motorist and entrap those who don't spend enough time staring at their speedo instead of at the road ahead.

So the country lanes that are currently at 30mph, will be just as unsafe at 50mph or 60mph. Its a waste of time unless you plan on annexing a revenue generating device to the legislation... which is what they'll do.
