David, you are wrong.

Those who 'hog the middle lane' reduced the total flow of the motorway. The easiest way for me to demonstrate this is to give you an example which you can check for yourself.

Quite a few section so the M25 now have 4 lanes. These were added to increase the total traffic flow at busy times. The logic was that the driving standards would remain the same leaving the outer-most lane free-er.

However, that's NOT what happened. Those CRETINS who used to 'hog the outer lane' now hog lane 4 instead..... it's STILL the one that's closest to the middle-barrier and the BMWs still congregate there with the Audis and the Off-Road Wannabes.

Those imbeciles who used to hog the middle lane, now hog lane 3 for EXACTLY the same reasons as the cretins in lane 4

That usually (at non-FULL rush hour times) means lane 2 is now used by the lorries leaving lane 1 often COMPLETELY FREE!

All this shouldn't cause a problem..... BUT.... the law prevents us overtaking on 'inside' and thus we are STILL stuck EXACTLY as it was before when we only had 3 lanes.... except that we spent a FORTUNE on the extra lanes and many of us spent fortunes and HOURS being delayed by the road-works need to BUILD the inner-most lane!

The ONLY up-side is that those of us who DO know which lane we are SUPPOSED to use now have two almost COMPLETELY empty inner lanes almost on our own and it's calms and peaceful down there! BUT..... the traffic flow rate has remained EXACTLY the same as it was before.....

All we need to do is to move the cretins and imbeciles into the lanes where they are SUPPOSED to use and we'll increase the flow-rate of the M25......

.... no BL**DY chance!

For those who DON'T know their highway code..... here's the relevant section:-

"You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. "
