you are right in your concern, avoid flames in a tent/awning around fuel. The Monoxide will also quickly be dangerous and they stink. Both heaters will use oxygen, propane more, take care to keep ventilated.
I use Propane in my work shop 'if I have to' because I get the gas for free, then turn it off as soon as possible.
