Having been a bit miffed by this problem, as it seemed blatantly obvious to me that the plane was moving forwards in relation to the ground. It seems the big problem here is with the myth being busted, rather than the physics involved. It's obvious that if the plane was somehow held stationary relative to the ground, it would not take off due to no air passing over the wings.

But I don't think that is what is being 'busted' here. My understanding is that they are simply trying to prove whether or not a conveyor belt can prevent a free-rolling plane from taking off. I think the original myth was just that an airplane cannot take off from a runway moving backwards.

It seems to me that it was basically trying to bust a myth that planes are driven by wheels and not a propeller!? A bit lame really but from what I can tell that is what they were trying to prove.

Ready to be corrected where necessary!
