Of course people have the right to kill themselves, stupidly. My objection, as I have stated from the start, is that this lethal race it is 'sold' as a spectator sport.... !
In all the time I have been writing on this subject, I have asked the question which N*O*N*E of you have answered... that is...
Take the nearest equivalent that I can find to the IOM TT in Karting. For want of a better example, let's use the TKM Festival. It's a long event, has many entries, is very popular.... but it's only the best I can think of so it's NOT a perfect parallel.
Now.... if the TKM Festival had a DEATH RATE of 2 racers EVERY (F*****) YEAR.... then various question would arise:-
1) How many years would YOU consider it acceptable to lose 2 drivers per year before YOU wanted the race changed to be safer.... even if that required BANNING it? Would that be 5 years and thus 10 deaths, 10 years and thus 20 deaths of ONE HUNDRED YEARS AND THUS 237 DEATHS....? Please note, I don't accept that 'safety changes' that STILL kill 2 racers per year AFTER the chnages count as SERIOUS attempts to improve the 'safety'!
2) Would motor-racing tolerate a return of Nurburgring for F1 if we lost TWO DRIVER PER YEAR at each race? (I accept that the 26 entrants per year in F1 is FAR less than the number entered into the TT and thus a lower death rate would be a fairer comparison.).
3) Would YOU let/encourage/help YOUR children (of ANY age, even if they were over 18) to ENTER the TKM Festival IF it had a death rate equal to that of the TT?
The answers to this will tell me quite a bit. I can't see why motorbike racers matter SO much less than do Karters of F1 drivers.
