Yes, spectators and organizers share the blame too. But no driver can walk away from having participated in something as ridiculous as this with a clear conscience. Having pressure applied to them to do it [as Lancia often did] is not a 'get out' either. The drivers knew the dangers posed to spectators and they went far beyond what was reasonable even then. They were regularly interviewed where they would be exasperated at this, but they still did it. Thankfully those days are behind us.
