Not exactly new though. Back in the turbocharger days they used to bypass the engine and pour fuel straight into the exhaust gas turbine so that the turbo lag was reduced, it compensated for the reduction in exhaust gas at low revs.

It got to the stage where an F1 driver was in control of one piston and eight jet engines, all in one car.
