Do cars get worse with evolution?

Been thinking about this for a while but what cars have evolved to be significantly better than the originals?

The mini was groundbreaking at its launch in '59 but then evolved into the metro which was no where near as impressive.

The E Type Jaguar was amazing then turned into the XJS which wasn't.

The original Land Rover in '49 was unlike any civilian vehicle before but 60 years later is the latest Defender that much better?

The early Escorts we great the last ones rubbish.

I really can't think of a car that has improved significantly with age. The improvements have only been small and inline with technological advances rather than an improvement in ideas.

Its like a great designer comes up with the initial idea then a committee of accountants and more importantly focus groups completely lose the direction the original theme.
