Just to put a slightly different perspective on your POV
Think about all those images from the Hubble Telescope, the images of the Sun producd by SDO, the close up images of Mars, Earth environmental images via Envisat (Google will explain those applications). The sensors for these and many more applications were all designed & built by engineers,operators & apprentices in the UK. Just this week we have interviewed for hopefully a dozen or so apprentices. 40+ years ago I started as one of those apprentices. Still there today Project Managing applications such as these. It is not all gloom & doom. We do still excel in high technology.
