whilst the death toll from the bombs was (most probably) much greater than the current situation, the bombs were targeted on the major population centres with a relatively localised effect (20km radius)
This Tsunami has impacted on thousands of km of coast with hundreds of population centres completely wiped out. fortunately many were saved due to the warning system, but the damage to infrastructure, roads, rail, ports, manufacturing , power generation and distribution, hospitals, farmlands, food supply, etc etc etc.... is much much greater than anything the bombs did.
Fortunately, Japan is probably the best prepared and resourced country to handle this situation.
