I was a student a few years ago and I would say roughly 50% of my peers were there to get a degree, the rest were there 'for the experience'. I guess I might have felt different a few years ago but i think that increasing tuition fees will help get rid of this element that aren't there to further their careers.

However I would point out:
-That it was a very small minority of protesting students that were being violent. You always get a few people who are there to cause trouble and who probably don't even know much about the cause.
-That there has been a lot of drinking at universities (well and pretty much everywhere) since god knows how long. That includes the people who are currently at a ripe age for moaning. Some of the stories I have heard from people my dad's age of the stuff they used to get up to... put it this wat you'd not want to tell them to your gran!

But one thing that annoys me is why the poor police always bear the brunt of these protests. After all they are in a similar situation to the students in that they could be facing cuts.

So in summary........its complicated!
