I would suggest he did it by driving above the safe limit and getting away with. He has little to lose if he crashes. He was probably helped by the championship contenders driving slightly below their safe limit. They have a lot to lose if they crash.

This might, to some extent, happen in the race. It is likely that the main goal of the contenders is to be still in contention next race, but this depends on each persons understanding of risk and reward. Also Hulkenburg probably feels he has more to lose now, and is likely to be more risk averse.

We will have to watch and see who does what.

Of course it could all be scripted and they all know where they are going to finish. But that is about as likely as gravity being a conspiracy to keep us on earth.
