Why would I need to defend the practice? My whole premise is that the State should have no opinion on religion and I certainly see no reason why the State should have an opinion on the clothes people choose to wear. Whether or not the clothing is worn by choice or by force is an issue of abuse, which is a far greater problem than will be solved by the banning of the Burka.
If your argument is that people shouldn't be allowed in public with their faces covered, then why limit the ban to the Burka? What about hoodies, sunglasses, baseball caps? They can all be used to obscure the identity of the wearer? If this is the case, the law should simply state that faces should be visible at all times when in public places. Such an argument would certainly have some merit.
