An interesting statement, since it is quite clear that you have no toleration at all and are driven almost entirely by prejudice.

Tolerant people do not load their statements with words like "abhorrent" or "nonsensical" particularly when there is some reasonable scientific possibility that religion could 1) be founded on fact and 2) is shown to be effective by research.

1) of course was demonstrated by Steven Hawking when he pointed out that the current understanding of particle physics indicated that he expected that the ability to create a universe would be demonstrated within his lifetime. He then asked whether, having exhibited all the powers of a god one actually was a god.

It would be remarkably hubristic to suggest that Man alone in the entire universe should understand particle physics and N-state maths, or be the first to do so. More, given our experience of scientists, it is highly likely that at least one human scientist will create his own universe to use as a testing ground for social engineering experiments, which might well require him to interact with the test subjects. One can imagine how explaining that he was in fact responsible for making the entire universe might lead to religions to worship him.

For 2) research has shown the practical value of being 'observed' will modify behaviour. We see this everyday with the number of house alarms and TV systems which are either not working of fake, but who rely on the belief that they are working. The use of an all-seeing God to produce desirable behaviour, when his absence so obviously promotes undesirable behaviour, is only a precursor of this trend.

Lastly, many of the responses in this thread betray a complete ignorance of what Islam contains, indeed is in many ways a pefect microcosm of all the lies and untruths that the tabloids would have one believe. Any and all beliefs held sufficiently strongly are open to abuse by those in power. The most cogent example at the moment is democracy, where many western countries are prepared to kill the inhabitants of other countries who don't want to vote like we do, even though the system and ideals such voting represents very visibly doesn't work.
