Ian, I don't know exactly... but estimates are that it is between GBP150BN and GBP180BN annually. Pretty significant I would have thought.
We've been moving towards a cash free society for a while now and for [almost] everybody its safer and more convenient. For example few if any company payrolls will entertain an employee's request to receive readies each month. In time, there will be a very small minority whose resistance to living cash free will be for 'other reasons'. My suggestion is we accelerate the process and flush these people out sooner rather than later.
Yes societies before us have tried and failed, but they haven't had the widespread uptake of centrally controlled oversight that we have now.
