just wondering if anyone can help

i like to make music on my computer and i used to record some very acceptable vocals on my old computer.i have a new and very good computer now but i seem utterly unable to record vocals on it.ive spent hours looking at preferences and stuff but i either end up with the recording coming out silent or something similar to bricks falling down a drain pipe.

what has got me thinking is that my mate(he generally the singer in our band)got a laptop and he was going to do the vocals on his computer.when i went to his house to get some recording done we encountered the same problem.either silence or a completely unacceptable sound quality.on looking at the preferences on his computer i noticed that we both had the same make of soundcard (realtek) and im wondering if its something to do with this?

incidentally we know its not the microphone as its been used elswhere with no issues.something else that may enlighten is that an electric guitar wont record either

any help would be greatfully received as what used to be a very simple task on my old computer is now something of an issue
