I know this sounds a little trite... but hear me out. View your 'proper' batchelors degree is a ticket to your first job. Having slogged it out at uni to get something like an engineering degree [they are very difficult... trust me !], you owe it to yourself to make sure that first job is the stepping stone to a decent career. Do not simply settle for what's available in this country if you can't get a decent graduate position in a pretty large company - emigrate as I did. When I graduated in 1990 it was in the depths of a recession. 100 people graduated from my uni in Dublin that year - 95% emigrated... 30% to Japan ! All secured very good jobs from day one.

In terms of moving forward with your career, I would also suggest that you supplement your bachelors degree with an MBA within a few years of graduating. That will be a tough slog too, but well worth the investment in time etc... It will massively enhance your opportunities of securing a very well paid management position in your late 20s. Aged 26 I was on the board of an NYSE quoted media company with full responsibility for technology there and a large team of people working for me. Its definitely possible.

Some important points to remember.

o Have a very clear plan of where you want to go and make sure that whatever you do, be it a batchelors degree in engineering or something else, greatly enhances your chances of getting there.

o Know what you're getting in to. I did electronic engineering. That's a very tough degree [we had 48 hours of lectures and practicals every week] and the subject matter itself was very difficult. You need to have steel determination to see it through and you won't be having the kind of fun that other people doing less worthwhile degrees will be having.

o Be open minded on where you will be working. Even though there's a recession here, Australia, China, India, Brazil are roaring away at the moment. Do not be averse to emigrating to get your career moving.
