That's pretty close to how we would remember it. San Marino was an .... interesting race...

However, I think they are glossing over the 'water cooled' brakes and being under-weight. The rules said that cars could top up lost fluids (water and oil) before weighing to allow for losses from leaks and overheating engines. That had been in the rules since the cars were front-engined monsters that leaked like sieves! In the early 80s (some of) the DFV cars we so far below the minimum weight that they 'pretended' to have water cooled BRAKES and then claimed that the 'top up' rules allowed them to be 'underweight' through loss of water. In truth, they were 'dumping' the water in the first few laps so that they could run light cars for the whole race. Not very 'khosher'!

The politics were not only in the teams but in (surprise surprise) the FIA who were even more APPALLING then.... Jean Marie Balestre (Max's predecessor) being simply stunning! You thought that Max is a bit 'right wing'???.... Jean-Marie had joined the French SS in the war..... Max seemed like the 'good guy' when he replaced Jean-Marie!
