Think you've misunderstood what I've said David. Unix is an operating system... interfaces and applications sit on top of it. Nobody's bothered to properly package Unix for the desktop and that's the reason why you don't have it on every desktop/laptop/netbook. Linux is a Lego Unix and not the real thing.
Its funny... shortly after I started my degree in Electronic Engineering 24 years ago, we were writing Unix device drivers in C for HDDs, displays etc... having learnt it Andrew S. Tanenbaum's book on 'MINIX'. I can't believe that Unix is still the daddy all these years later. Truely amazing.
