He doesn't tell you the truth though....... the TRUTH is...
If you want a machine that's:
* VASTLY overpriced * sale's are driven only by Marketing Hype * Will fail to connect to a decent WiFi connection whenever you NEED it * Will be IMPOSSIBLE to repair * Have NO useful software available for them * is more about LOOKS than DOING anything
.... then buy a Mac!
The advatange of a Mac is that you'll look 'Cool'..... to people who know NOTHING about computers..... (but you'll be LAUGHED at, quite loudly, by people who DO!)
****
Having dealt with Alan's Mac Madness.... we'll deal with the TRUTH here!
The Mac Book (of all types) is an extremely pretty and elegant object. It'll be simple to use if you know NOTHING about computers. Some programs run VERY well on it but they tend to be of the 'artistic' type (images, music, video). The cost of those programs will be STAGGERING! The Mac CAN run programs made for (real) PCs by teling the Mac to pretend to BE a PC (called an: emulation). You won't be able to SHARE any prograns with friends unless they have a Mac and only about 1 in 20 of every Computer sold, today will be a Mac.
The PC will be VASTLY cheaper and unlikely to be as pretty. There is SO much software out there at LOW prices that you can buy/borrow/steal (err.... naughty!) almost anything you need. It CAN be more 'clunky' (complex to get into the technical stuff). The reason for this is because your PC is designed to run programs produced by MILLIONS of separate companies whereas the Mac is aimed at keeping the software sales VERY much under Apples control! 99% of companies NOT in the 'image' industry will be using PCs. If you become and expert on your Mac, then most companies will need to retrain you to work with REAL PCs. Not many companies will be able to use your (non) transferrable Mac skills
There are over a BILLION PCs out there; 99% of programmers write NEW programs so that they can tap into that GIGANTIC market. Far less are willing to write for the Mac because there are so FEW of them out there!
You can guess..... I like PCs..... Alan doesn't and thinks that Macs ARE computers......
For me, the 'shorthand' way of putting it is that the Mac is like a bike with training wheels. It'll be GREAT to learn about computers..... however, just like a bike with training wheels, you'll soon be fed up with staying within the VERY limited 'playgound' controlled by Apple. The PC is a MUCH more grown up device.... more of a Harley Davidson than a kiddy's bike.... it's harder to ride but you won't EVER manange to grown-out of it!
So.... as you have been told already..... what do you want to DO with it? If it's email, facebook, twitter, editing pictures, music and videos but only doing a LITTLE bit of REAL 'work'... then the Mac will be PERFECT for you...
If 'work' (Word Processing, Spread sheets, Databsases, etc.) is a part of your need for having a computer, the the PCD ios the best way to go........and STAGGERINGLY cheaper.... if not so pretty!
Finally..... how have you got to univerity age WITHOUT having a working knowledge of PCs? Didn't your school HAVE computers..... if they did..... you may prefer to choose the same 'type' (mac or PC) on which you learned.
*********
Desk Top PCs are bigger, cheaper, less portable, easier to repair, usually, offer better key boards and screens
Lap Top PCs are smaller, more expensive, easily stolen and/or broken, poratble, worse keyboard and screens
Net Books are seriously 'cut-down' PC lap tops with smaller screens, smaller keyboards, usually don't come with CD or DVD drives but are lighter to carry and they are bought by people who don't REALLY use computers.... just facebook, twitter, email etc...... and who are usually btrying to pretend that they have SUCH busy lives that they can't be without their PC for a SECOND...... as if!
Macs...... well..... I've covered them!
