The reason is simple, Davy, and is EXACTLY the same reason why those of use who don't USE (for example) the State School system are NOT allowed to opt-out of PAYING for those who DO use it! That's becasue it's a FAIRER system to pay for things which are GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY!
Think through what you are saying...... if it WAS funded by private subscription, then many of the Old and most of the lowest-paid in society could NOT afford it! If you decided to exempt those groups from paying (so that get a free licence) then the costs would be SO high for those remaining few who would be LEFT paying that almost NOBODY would would PAY for it6 and thus the BBC would DIE and we'd be left with the S**T pum ped out by ITV, SKY and the rest of the 'channels for the mindless'.
IF the BBC was subscription only, there would NEVER have been:-
1) Life on Earth 2) Black Adder (the GOOD version!) 3) Monty Python 4) Fawlty Towers 5) ANY of the better 'costume dramas' (which I don't enjoy!) 6) Grown-Up NEWS coverage 7) Decent F1 coverage 8) Yes Minister, 9) The Thick of It 10) Steptoe and Son 11) 'Til death do us Part 12) Panorama 13) Later - with Jools Holland 14) ANY examples of un-interrupted (by advert) TV programs...... 15) and SO on.......
If you want to see how BAD TV is when it's 99% PAID for, then just spend a week in America..... My GOD, you'll appreciate the BBC after that!
But... to simplify things.... when you can tell me why I should pay TAXES for old age pensioners who were too WASTEFUL to save for their retirement, then I'll tell you (probably the SAME answer!) why YOU should pay your BBC licence!
