If the vacuum had failed and you didn't notice, you could be dealing with Delhi belly.

What about chips in newpaper, arrowroot biscuits on the pub step, (anyone remember pubs?)

Paraffin stoves with unstable bases.

Gas that would actually KILL you if you inhaled it.
