You don't need an architect to design a house... I've completely reconfigured my house and done all the design and drafting myself. I had a structural engineer to handle all the calcs and together we handled the planning and building regs approval process. By far and away the biggest problem through the entire exercise were the local council planners. I was told by somebody later that the reason I had so much diffiulty was that I had not greased enough palms there and judging by a number of developments that occurred within a stone's throw of my own home... I now understand very clearly.

What architects bring to a house are ideas. Their strength is in realizing the desires of the person that commissions them within the constraints of what's possible. If you're capable of doing that yourself... then you don't need one.
