ITVF1.com explain it in laymans terms...
Renault has been handed a two-year suspended disqualification from Formula 1 after admitting to race-fixing in last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.
The French manufacturer’s former team boss Flavio Briatore has been punished for his role in the conspiracy with a lifetime ban from FIA-sanctioned events and driver management, while ex-engineering chief Pat Symonds given a five-year ban.
Following a 90-minute hearing at the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council on Monday, F1’s governing body announced that it considered the team’s plot to cause a deliberate crash to be of "unparalleled severity” which warranted permanent disqualification from the sport.
However, after taking into account Renault’s unreserved apology to the court and the fact it had parted company with the two men at the centre of the scandal ahead of the hearing – Briatore and Symonds – the WMSC had decided to suspended the disqualification for two years.
The penalty will only be activated if Renault “is found guilty of a comparable breach” between now and the end of the 2011 season.
“The World Motor Sport Council considers Renault F1’s breaches relating to the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to be of unparalleled severity.,” an FIA statement read.
“Renault F1’s breaches not only compromised the integrity of the sport but also endangered the lives of spectators, officials, other competitors and Nelson Piquet Jr. himself.
“The World Motor Sport Council considers that offences of this severity merit permanent disqualification from the FIA Formula One World Championship.
“However, having regard to the points in mitigation mentioned above and in particular the steps taken by Renault F1 to identify and address the failings within its team and condemn the actions of the individuals involved, the WMSC has decided to suspend Renault F1’s disqualification until the end of the 2011 season.
“The World Motor Sport Council will only activate this disqualification if Renault F1 is found guilty of a comparable breach during that time.”
The FIA said Renault's former driver Nelson Piquet Jr, who was found guilty of conspiring with Symonds and Briatore to cause the crash with helped its other driver Fernando Alonso win the race, "apologised unreservedly" for his part in the plot, but will face no personal punishment after the FIA offered him full immunity in exchange for a full disclosure of the facts.
Alonso, meanwhile, has been cleared of all involvement in the plot and the FIA thanked the double world champion for his help with their enquires after he appeared at Tuesday's hearing.
My take on it...
Briatore banned from ANY FIA run motorsport for life and also has to give up his management of F1 drivers or their licences wont be renewed.
Pat banned for 5 years for holding any position within FIA run motorsport
Renaults punishment suspended for 2 years,if they commit any other offence of (probably) a significant magnatude within 2 years then.....who knows??? Maybe a lifetime ban also.
Notice the lack of ANY fine, apart from the voluntary contribution from renault to the FIA towards road safety.
