michaelg36 ,good luck with the selection board .

The situation as shown on TV ,didn't warrant the amount of physical force used.

In my honest opinion the police should use non-touch technique more often, when was the last time anybody saw tear gas being deployed in mainland UK? If they used it then the protestor would soon disperse, providing the Police didn't kettle them and covered there escape route.

Officers must have the right to protect themselves, the public and property,a middle aged obviously overweight and probably unfit gentleman walking away from the Officer concerned hardly looks a threat, likewise the petite ,yet foulmouthed woman hardly deserved a Baton across the thigh or a backhanded slap in riot gloves. A tug towards him, then shove her behind him and arrest her for a Public order offence and £200 fine would probably have been better in everyones eyes.

These guys (and women) need some serious retraining in riot situations. With more "live" riot simulation where the training staff act as Protesters and assess the suitability for TSG service instead of a few hours training in "riot control" at Hendon. Not everyone emotionally and mentally stable enough to be a PC is suitable to be in these situations,as michaelg36 will find,he will be tested for suitability for various locations, incidents Etc; but they don't always get it right.

2 instances to prove this from a friend of mine in the Devon and Cornwall constabulary training college. one officer recruited signed up and salaried was found to be "scared of the dark" another, again thankfully while still in the College, was Haemophobic (scared of / fainted at the sight of blood) both thought it wouldn't exclude them from service. Both sadly wrong.
So if they can fail on simple issues like that can they guarantee that every Officer they put in the situation will not become aggressive or overreact to minor incidents?

Another thing, don't know if it is the same up and down the country, but i noticed a few on TV last week and have noticed some locally, are your local Police starting to look like 1970s Skinheads? Shaved or close cropped hair and tatoos, I saw one the other day who looked frightening and if I was a kid I'd run a mile not go to him for help !

Michael don't get a skinhead and cover any tatoos up,good luck mate.
