John,

Explain how it would be impossible for the statistics to stay the same if the situations I suggested had occured. I have clearly shown that your interpretation of the statistics is mathematically and logically incorrect.

I will take the easiest example. 50% of people speed, 13% of fatal accidents are due to speeding (or people speeding at the time; again it's irrelevant to the correct interpretation of the statistics). It is entirely possible (though extremely unlikely) for those statistics to arise with just ONE of the "speeders" committing ALL of the 13% of fatal accidents.

You simply CANNOT link two discrete sets of data in such a way. I generally agree with your overall position on road safety and am not at all trying to suggest that speeding is the major contributory factor to road accidents, yet cannot accept the incorrect application of statistics you are applying.
