Chris, you are right, we'll never eliminate all accidents, simply because there are human errors, as well as idiots on the road which cannot be avoided. An accident is just that: and accidental event.

I gave an answer in a previous thread as to what you can do to make pedestrians think twice about crossing the road in the wrong place: change the blame emphasis from 100% being the driver to 100% who was in the wrong, by bringing a law against JayWalking. Pedestrians should know as well as the driver, if not better, what the rules about crossing the road safely are. And bring in a penalty for ignoring them.
But again for this we need bobbies on the beat who can administer penalties to pedestrians!

We need to ingrain in people's minds this message: THE ROAD IS FOR CARS, THE FOOTPATH IS FOR PEDESTRIANS. Full stop!

Only once we get to the level where that sentence above is in everybody's conscience we can start to do somthing about the rest of the accidents. Until then the driver will be responsible for hazard spotting and avoiding everything, from the moving on-coming car, to the pedestrians gently walking along the road. And his attention is everywhere but where it should be: on the road!

My reasoning about all this is double fold: all drivers are pedestrians as well, yet even some of you, the drivers, freely accept that it is your DUTY to avoid the pedestrians. So what do you do when you get out of the car? Do you automatically abandon your own safety to the other drivers? NO!

You gave some very pertinent physics explanations to the effects of speed, acceleration, rate of change etc. and came to the conclusion that in order to avoid or reduce the incident of fatalities, we need to reduce the speed at which the car travels. I brought forward another argument, well supported by your physics exposits: remove the pedestrian.
Why is it supported by your exposits? Because it proves your theory and supports your solution!
THE PEDESTRIAN IS MOVING AT A SPEED AT WHICH HE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT AVOIDING THE ACCIDENT! If he/she is paying attention and crossing in places where the driver will expect to see and avoid pedestrians!

So you see, if you fix the meeting place of flesh and metal to ONLY a number of places where BOTH can and do expect to meet, you'll automatically reduce the incidence of car/pedestrian accidents!

For the rest of the journey both pedestrian and driver can concentrate on the hood/MP3 and driving respectively!

The main reason we have have slipped to the curent situation is simple: MONEY! Or rather the attempt as saving as much of it. Every single person in this land directly pays for POLICE! We do it through our council tax! But for the last 10'ish years all we've been getting is reduction in the nimber of bobbies in areas WE, THE TAXPAYER, want/need them!
In its place the government has given us the, surveillance camera, the PCSO and a plethora of automated speed cameras which only works on a range of 20meters and everybody hates!

Isn't it about time we do something about tackling the root cause, deal with the cause of the accident rather than continuously implementing half baked solutions that are only designed to increase the survivability of the said accident?

We're already talking about it! It will take as long as any other method to change people's attitudes, so I won't accept that putting even more cameras, or blank lowering the speed limits is the only option!

Dan
