Chris, the pedestrians shouldn't just need to be "more aware" but even think twice, three times about crossing the road! Simply because at the low speeds they travel they can avoid a collision with a vehicle better than a vehicle can!
And we'll only do that when, like our "young" kudos mentioned, we educate the pedestrian at least as much as the driver, or we start hitting the pedestrian in the pocket! Until then you'll get more and more hooded and MP3'd zombies simply walking into the path of cars with the attitude: IT'S THE DRIVER'S DUTY TO AVOID ME!!!
