John & QOT come on!

I havn't read the whole lot of postings, but I just got to the one that said 'In what way has this REALLY got to do with speeding?' Are you serious?!

One short and simple answer really, he was TRIPPLE the speed limit! THREE times! Over 90 in a 30 zone! How can it be put any simpler?

I can see that people are not claiming the policemans innocence, however as for claims that speed does not kill, im not sure whether to laugh or cry!

Just look at the simple physics equations F=ma or E=1/2m.c^2, the higher the deceleration (stopping from a high velocity to zero in a short amount of time), the higher the force applied to the 'body' that is decelerating the object (car, bike, boat, plane, whatever!); and the energy to be absorbed by the human body is proportional to the square of the velocity! Human bodies dont take too kindly to large forces being applied to them, or having to absorb huge amounts of energy come to that.

You are dead RIGHT in saying that if we stopped and drove nowhere then no one would be killed on the road - spot on! (with the odd exception, there will always be one!). However speed limits are set for a reason, its a big compromise between keeping the world moving and reducing the risk of serious injury or death should such an incident occur!

Yes the loose nut behind the steering wheel is generally to blame when a car is over the speed limit - but does that make it ok? Does that make it alright to speed? Does that make speed not kill? No it does not! Put the same loose nut on a moped that is restricted to (for arguments sake) ~30mph and they will a) be less likely to crash, and b) if they do crash (in a location where they would have been travelling at a higher speed than 30mph had their vehicle not been restricting them) they would enflict far less damage / injury to themselfs and their surroundings! I am not saying everyone should drive mopeds, im not even saying that everyone should drive everywhere at 30mph, im just getting the point across that speed DOES kill! Two identical accidents (with the exception of the speed), one at 30mph, the other at 100mph - which is more likely to a) cause more damage to the driver and b) cause more damage to their surroundings - if ANYONE can answer b) with any form of seriousness, they are either a sick person, or a little on the dim side.

I fully admit to having sped before on public roads, I am in this sense a hipocrit. However when I have / do speed (not that I do often these days, the old girl has well over 200k on the clock!) I do it at my own risk (and to others around me) but I certainly would never condone speeding and think the idea that speed does not kill is absured! Just pulling out of your driveway (one I read earlier) is a risk (albeit a small one), let alone driving at speed! Or (more to the point) coming together with someone who is driving at speed, therefore putting you at risk in a situation that is out of your control.

When you ask how many people do you think are speeding at any one moment, I will not avoid the question - I say it does not matter in the slightest! That statement can be compared to me asking how many people do you think are jumping off a cliff at any one moment in time? Could be zero, could be one hundred - the point is that jumping off a cliff drematically increases your chances of death! As does speeding, however (more horrifying in my opinion) speeding also increases the chances of killing someone else, jumping off a cliff (debatably) doesnt!

There is a time and a place for speed, thats the race track! You any everyone else around you know the risks involved, safety gear is (usually) compulsary, medical help is always on standby at the scene and everyone is expecting a moving vehicle to be moving at a rate of knots!
