The only thing better about the Garmin than the TomTom is the after sales service - generally if there is a fault with the unit it is exchanged over the counter (I speak for Halfords anyhow) if the fault cannot be rectified by an 'expert'.

The TomTom have of recent added several 'gadgets' on the GO range (dearer of the units) which has downgraded my opinion of them ever so slightly, however I can see that this is merely 'keeping up with the competition'.

On the plus side I find the TomToms easier to use than the Garmins, but in my opinion the most appealing part of the TomTom is the interface - its nice to look at, and at a glance you can see exactly where you are and what it wants you to do (which is exactly what you want, much like checking your mirrors). With the Garmin unit (in my opinion anyhow) I feel that every time I look at the screen I need to look twice to confirm my position and what its advising me to do.

If I were to buy one, I would get one of the TomTom ONE Europe units - Navigation and European maps, none of the 'voice activation or mp3 player' jargon that comes with the GO range.

However for a fraction of the price of a Sat Nav system I purchased a UK map (£3.50) and a compass (£10.00)! Wont break down, and when(by user error) it takes me to the wrong location I have more chance of working out where I am suppost to be!

To be fair to Sat Nav's, they can save time, and when time is money that is a good thing. But the only time I have used one on an unfamilure journey I hated the fact I had no idea where I was! Only my opinion.

Hope this helps

Regards

Chris Adams
