I know many people with in local authorities and NHS trusts that earn more than MPs. They also work long hours but I have not known any who have a second job that pays better than their main one.
This is not the case with many MPs.
I also think you are being either very naive or just argumentative to say "All you have to do is PERSUADE us you'll be BETTER at the job! It's EASY... there's no qualifications, no colour, race, gender, sex orientation bias.... just TELL us what you stand for and GO for it...."
To have any chance of the `top job' you would have to be elected either as a labour or Conservative MP (maybe LIbDem at some future time) and to do that you do not convince the public - you convince a party selection panel and sex, colour, race etc can play a part there. Central party can have a strong influence on the type of candidate selected.
At local parish council level people will vote for a person. As you move further along the political ladder it gets harder for the independent to get elected. how many people really vote for the person rather than the party nominee.
Paying far higher salaries to MPs would not guarantee the best people apply for the jobs - we would get a lot of higher paid monkeys.
