Joking aside, the only feature drivers have to aid starts these days is the anti-stall. Traction control and launch control are no more (although a different engine map may be used to reduce torque).
Rubens was F3 champion in 1991. Interestingly, no British F3 champion since has won a Grand Prix and only four since (I think) have gone on to compete in a Grand Prix. Being knee high to a grass hopper at the time, I can't recall what his starts were like, although F3 isn't renowned for overtaking so they couldn't have been that bad.
His start in the Aussie GP would have looked worse (or better) than it really was because the anti-stall would need to be reset (typically neutral, clutch, first although some are more convoluted). Of course, in days gone by, the whole field would have gone past him but you'd have known he'd stalled since he wouldn't be going anywhere.
