Rolex, Bang & Olufsen, Aston Martin, Bristol, Mont Blanc and the countless other “premium” brands are mostly nothing more than re-packaged, ordinary, mass-produced kit. Quite a number of them will be found out as the “smoke & mirrors” that they are and disappear during this recession.

But if you want the Bang & Olufsen look, rather than just the Panasonic or whatever is inside for less than half the price, good luck to you.

People buy (or at least used to buy) Bentley Continentals: I never understood why – I’d have its VW Phaeton twin for half the money any day of the week.

However, at least these “premium” products are technical clones and therefore provide the same performance, if not value. The Mac does less for much, much more.

How do you “better yourself” by letting yourself be conned?
