Wrong.

"The Gonvernment is ONLY doing what the PUBLIC WANT it to!"

The Government is doing pretty much whatever it wants. The only thing the public gets worked up about is a subset of that reported in the media; typically immigration and their pay packet.

"Most of us sane people realise that we NEED to lose some of our prissy 'privacy' for the 'greater good' (a delightfully scarey and historic term!). "

Of course we need to lose some privacy for the greater good. However, you have clearly stated that this line gets drawn when "bad guys stop doing bad things". I have clearly demonstrated this is not the case, nor should it ever be so.

"The shock is that you FAILED to notice that our ABSOLUTE right to privacy vanished THOUSANDS of years ago when ANY society dictated LAWS! It's those of you who have only just NOTICED that you have NO absolute right to privacy under ANY laws who are whining, NOW! The RULES haven't changed.... it's that YOU have only just NOTICED it!"

Comparisons to thousands of years ago are irrelevant. We have already agreed that some freedoms must be sacrificed for the greater good. The argument is about where we draw the line. See my comment above. Moreover, the rules have changed. For instance, increasing the detention time without charge is a clear change and clear (and troubling) infringement of our freedoms.
