lets be right here:
4 wheel drive/winter tyres/snow chains are only any good if everyone has them and have had reasonable instruction in their use. It's all well and good driving over a fjiord etc where there's no traffic but it has no relation to the here and now.
Looking on my little road(with @ 20cm snow in the last 24 hrs on a steep hill,exit at the top) the only two of us with any sense not to try and go anywhere are those of us with 4wd at our disposal. Why? because we know were not going very far stuck behind everyone else.

guess who's had his door knocked and asked for a tow up the hill etc almost countless times now.

But that's been one day in over 4 years here and it could be another 20 years before it's so bad again. can't blame your average joe for not having snow chains,winter tyres/4wd
