The problem is to get any sort of range you still need vaste amounts of battery. The tesla only has a range of 200miles and that has 400kgs of batteries. Not exactly wheel it out and in territory.

The problems encountered with Li Ion batteries are them randomly setting on fire. Not something a hardened case could sort out. They need incredibly complex cooling systems. Its why the Prius using Ni Cad even though they are heavier.

There are electric cars that do 70mph, but they only last for about 70 miles. In somewhere like London that isn't a disaster (average speed of 4mph) but anywhere else its a waste of time. Plus you're still looking at a charge time of 6 hours. The Smart electric car is currently being used by selected blue chip companies to test in London, but it only does 70mph, takes 6.3 seconds to 30mph lasts 70miles and takes an overnight charge. Even the cars that are no available (if we ignore such classics as the G-Wiz) are upwards of Ł20k.

Chris, I appreciate what you are trying to say, but I think you are very naive about the levels that technology have reached.
