I (me and kart) was launched 6ft into the air in 1997 as a kid after running into the rear wheel of a honda cadet at the first corner at Rowrah. That wouldn't have happened with these new rear bumpers.

But yes, flips are mainly caused by side to side contact and the resultant interlocking of wheels, which doesn't always seem to be minimised by the current bodywork. I think it has been designed with impact protection in mind.
