It is proving quite a challenge, I certainly have not found a way as yet. At this day and age they are turning down projects to be undertaken for FREE!

Having completed a undergraduate in engineering I continued onto postgraduate studies and require a project. I sent in hard copies of my CV and a covering letter saying that I wanted a project title to all the F1 teams (one to an individual, just incase they got to read it, and another to the HR dept). I tried selling them both mine and the universities services for free - especially with the economy in its current climate and proposed 'cost cuts' I'd have thought, (especailly with the smaller teams) having the chance to ship some projects off to acedemics they would have at least come up with something! Even it it was a non-critial component that could potentially be 'improved' if someone had the time (that costs money) to dedicate towards it. Unfortunatelly I had a little too much faith it seemed!

I have had a couple of replys back saying they are afraid that they have no job opertunities available at the moment (I can understand they will get thousands of letters through the mail, but it would be nice if the HR departments would at least read the application!).

The most supprising reply I have had was from BMW saying that neither during, nor after my postgraduate studies would there be a position for me! (As politely as they could, telling me to naff off!).

It seems (as is often the case in most industries) that it helps if you know an insider that can 'put in a good word' and actually give your CV to the correct person that requires reading it! (as has happened to a fellow student on my course).

Never the less, keep trying - the worst they can say is no!

Of course this is only tapping into the engineering side of the story, the PR, Hospitality etc... side of things may be a totally different story.
