when i first started out in karting (rotax)i could barely hold a spanner(thats still a debateable point now i have to say!).my kart lived up north in my mothers garage and i lived down south.the only oportunities i got to work on it were when i arrived at her house and id try and give it a go over in the early hours of friday morning.i left anything mechanical alone as my way of thinking at the time was if it aint broke dont mend it.obviously as time went on i just got more and more silly things going wrong with the kart and ruining my weekend.so,my ideas on prepping karts changed around about a year after beginning but my ability to do anything about it was fairly limited
things changed when i got the kart down at my house.i enjoy prepping the kart and the first thing i do is clean it from front to back, every single area of it.i find that the process of really cleaning every area means that you are looking and touching every section of kart, you notice any marks, bumps, loose bolts, cracks etc. straight away.after the cleaning i then go through a check list of stuff i need to do,again this is made easier with a clean kart
one thing ive noticed on a practical level for example is that i can remember on one occasion coming in from the track with the engine not feeling great.i took a quick look at the engine and instantly noticed some drips of black oil on the seat.the very fact that the kart was very clean meant that the oil/fuel stood out and i could even see the direction it was coming from.a quick diagnosis was instantly possible
what i like about prepping the kart is that when you plonk it down on a saturday mornig i have a little added confidence.i know i cant spend loads of money on karting but i can dedicate as much time as i can(which is free!)to making sure the karts properly prepped and that nothing stupid is going to go wrong with it(of course though, its racing and sometimes things do go wrong but if you minimise the possibilities its less likely).haing a stupid issue with the kart on a saturday or sunday morning can set you back so much for the weekend
blimey.just looked back at this, its an essay.im not a clean freak by the way! :)
