No: 'sientists' never DID believe that the Earth was Flat! This is yet ANOTHER classic!

The 'man in the street' never gave it a THOUGHT so he MAY have assumed it's flat...... but every sailor for example KNEW it was CURVED because, as he sailed from land, he could see the CURVE beginning to obscure the shore, LONG before he 'reached' the 'horizon'! He also noticed that EVERY other ship, no matter WHAT direction it sailed in (once we was at sea) always strated to disappear 'below the horizon' even if BOTH ships were still in sight of land. That showed them that the earth MUST be curved the same in ALL directions..... excpet for the landward direction... of course./

Even Ptolemy knew it (90. A.D.)

Some Egyptian philosopher knew it a 1000 years earier but I can't rember his name. He was stabding on the equator and look down a well at midday. He could see a reflection of the sun. The following year, on EXACTLY the same day, he was looking down a well, significantly further to the north on EXACTLY thje same day and he noticed that he COULDN'T see the SAME reflection of the sun! and could only see PART of it. he knew the distance north that he had travelled and cou;d see ho much of the reflection was 'missing'. He could them calculate the ROUGH size of the ONLY possible shape for the Earth that would CAUSE this!

Secondly, (on a more pedantic basis) the WORD 'scientist' was only 'coined' in the 19th century and by then we KNEW the Earth was a 'sphere'. So.... by then, only TRULY dim 'scientists' thought the Earth was FLAT!
