Although we're Iame users I've always noticed something similar. Basically that the most common engine mount (supplied with than engine) seems to be really designed for bigger tubing (30 or 32mm, can't remember), although I never noticed any crushing I didn't like the point contact and damage to powdercoat etc.
So on our the last two chassis, the first thing I've done is take some bigger diameter tube, split it length ways, then cut four short lengths, round the corners, clean up etc. I then stick these to the top of the chassis tubes covering the 'adjustment' area. I use a flexible PU adhesive.
It sounds more complicated that it is, in general it takes about an hour. Once done, the engine mout is a perfect fit, it looks super neat (with or without engine), that area remains totally chip free, plus it must be better for the chassis!
