If you weigh 180kgs on every other set of scales and you have no weight to loose, bar chopping a limb off. The scales reading heavy has a big impact!

Driver A in Kart X normally 180kg (no ballast)
Driver B in Kart Y normally 180kg (5kg ballast)

Scales are say 4.5 kg heavy Driver A will weigh 184.5kg, Driver B can remove 4.5kg of weight and gain probably 2/10ths a second per lap.

It's not rocket science, I'm afraid!!!
