That's not a bad price, although I'd make sure you get the right spec. The volumes sold makes the QX4 oil alert version cheaper to the trade, which although identical other than a hole for the sender in the block, will not be legal for MSA racing.
In terms of the original question, it is very easy to see a knackered con rod, because they tend to pick up. It's actually quite rare for a con rod to wear out under normal use, it's the big end on the crank that goes first.
I mix and match cranks and rods all the time and as long as they are within or close to tolerance, never a problem.
I would suggest that you might even be looking in the wrong place, the other weak spot on the GX is the inside journal on the camshaft, if this is worn it can sound very much like a big end on it's way out.
