Once dismantled, the only this to keep an eye on in terms of maintenance is the float, its spring and plug. Just make sure then condition of the plug is good, and that the cone comes to a nice point.

How are you cleaning them?

I have had most success when I dismantle the carb down to every last piece and soak the lot in paraffin for at least 24 hours. This dissolves any grit and dirt.

I then, still dripping in paraffin, scrub all areas I can get into with a tooth brush, and all exterior areas that my inhabit dirt which could one day find its way inside! Also, pay special attention to the pilot jet, main jet and emulsion tubes at this stage.

I'll then rinse all parts with water, usually a fast running tap will do the job.

Finally I'll blast all the pilot holes, over flows and anywhere else I can with aerosol carb cleaner (with spray straw). Also, pay special attention to the pilot jet, main jet and emulsion tubes at this stage

Then leave the lot to dry out in a clean / dust free environment.

*THIS IS THE KEY BIT*

I then replace ALL gaskets when reassembling the carb and when fitting the carb back onto the engine. Using old gaskets, that have most likely got grit in them, will more than likely un-do all the hard work you have just put in. Fitting all new gaskets will also minimise the risk of any leaks.

You now have a gleaming carb that should not suffer from any blockages for some time... but to make sure you seal the deal, also wash the air intake elbow with lots of Fairy Liquid and warm water (and get one of those chimey style flexible brushes through it plenty of times) and clean the foam part of your Air filter. If you have removed the paper filter, wash the metal air filter cage too, but make sure you dry it straight away to avoid any surface rust forming. Don't for get to clean the spacer too, but do that GENTLY with soapy water and a sponge as I have managed to strip the rubber from this once before by using more corrosive agents; if that happens you will need a new one, as that is ONE OF dirt's favourite routes in!

Any shortcuts will more than likely lead to a blockage in your carb sooner than it should happen. This level of cleaning will ensure the maximum level of reliability you can ask for.

So in summary, once you've cleaned your carbs:
- Clean inside and out with parrafin, water, toothbush and finally carb cleaner
- Fit all new gaskets
- Wash the air intake system

Gaskets you will need are:
- Carb Gasket Set: #16010-ZE1-812
- Carb Gasket: #16221-ZH8-801
- Insulator Gasket: #16212-ZH8-800

Some people may say its a bit over board, and maybe it is.. but I do it- to be sure, to be sure!

Hope that helps.
