Not being steeping in the karting tradition of direct drive / 100cc / 2-stroke, I don’t get all this nostalgia either. To me the high-pitched noise is awful and the stench is virtually intolerable. I don’t see any good ole days there.

Yes, I can see the benefit during practice / testing of learning to avoid offs and stoppages as kart recovery would then often be a pain, and thereby to become a tidier driver.
But when racing? You said it yourself: there would be virtually no chance of getting on the podium or doing well after an off. So I would think that the incentive to stay on the track is just as strong in a TAG kart.
