Thinking on, Jeff's solution sounds more plausable. A decompressor stuck in one position would cause hard starting but the other symtoms would need the decompressor stuck in the opposite direction at the same time.

It does sound like some sort of compression lock, have you checked the oil level? If you have seperate fuel tanks, you could have ended up with fuel seeping into the sump.
